Buy the intermediate build and spend the difference on arrows and coaching, which will do more for your groups than any line on this list.
  • Any bowhunter who hunts thick cover with one bow. The front and rear stabilizer system is the only honest way to correct a bow that torques sideways at full draw, and it is also genuinely awkward getting through brush and in a ground blind. The tuning tools row and the arrows row are the two that matter, and both are tools rather than gear. That is the honest summary of this tier: you are buying a workshop, not a better shot. The sight, rest and quiver rows are real improvements and they are incremental, worth having and not worth changing tiers for on their own.

The arrow bench: what building your own actually changes

Factory fletched arrows are a combination someone else chose. Building your own means choosing four things independently: shaft spine, cut length, point weight and FOC. They interact, which is the part that makes it interesting and the part that makes a jig worth owning.

Spine is dynamic, not static. The number printed on a shaft is a static measurement. What the arrow actually does off the string depends on draw weight, arrow length, point weight and cam aggression together. A heavier point weakens dynamic spine. A longer arrow weakens it too. That is why adding the brass inserts on this list to raise FOC usually means moving one step stiffer on the shaft, and why the spine calculator asks for four inputs. Check the result against the spine chart before you cut anything, because cutting is not reversible.

FOC is a lever with a cost. Front of centre is (balance point minus half the arrow length) divided by arrow length, times 100, with length measured throat of nock to back of insert and excluding the point. Target archers usually sit between 7 and 12 percent, bowhunters between 10 and 15 percent, and extreme FOC builds run above 19 percent. The floor does not move. Whatever you build, total finished arrow weight stays at or above 5 grains per pound of draw weight. Cutting carbon deserves respect. The arrow saw produces carbon dust that you should not breathe and splinters that you should not handle carelessly. Wear eye protection, use extraction or cut wet, and let the wheel do the work rather than forcing the shaft. The tuning bench, and the order to buy it in

Buy the bow vise first and the press last, even though the press is the item that looks like the serious purchase. A vise holds the bow square while you set centreshot, level a sight and check cam lean, and that is most of the tuning work people wrongly buy a press for. It costs about a seventh of the press.

The paper tuning frame is the fastest diagnostic in archery: shoot through paper at two distances and the shape of the tear tells you whether the problem is nock height, centreshot or fletching contact. Press safety is not a formality. A pressed bow holds enough stored energy to injure you if a finger slips off a limb or the fingers are set for the wrong limb geometry. Speed, sight tapes and why a chronograph earns its place

IBO speed is a marketing standard measured at a 30 inch draw, 70 lb, with a 350 grain arrow. Almost nobody shoots all three. As a rough correction, expect about 10 fps less for every inch of draw length under 30, and about 1 fps less for every 3 grains of arrow weight over 350. Those are estimates, and the IBO speed chart lays the numbers out, but estimates are exactly what a single-pin sight tape cannot survive.

That is what the chronograph is for.
